The High Coast

Ulvön
Höga Kusten - hills and sea combined
The Ångermanland coast is the highest and steepest coast along the entire Baltic. Here the sea meets the mountains, but it has not always been the case. During the last ice age the ice sheet of this area was maybe 3 kilometers thick and the earth´s crust was compressed. After it had melted away, the land was gently raised from the sea, and this isostatic uplift is still in progress on today. This is the main reason why the High Coast has been designated a World Heritage Site.external link, opens in new window

Ulvön
Ulvön is known as the "Pearl of the Gulf of Bothnia", and it´s fair to assume that there´s a reason for this name. Taking a walk along the sea front in this fishing village stimulates all the senses, and a trip up Lotsberget mountain, with its magnificent views, is well worth the effort. On the island of Ulvön, fascinating history blends with modern tourism. There are plenty of places to spend the night here, and to satisfy even the most ravenous hunger. And if surströmming, a Swedish fish delicacy, were to have a spiritual home, it´d be here.

Ulvö chapel, the oldest fishermen´s chapel which is preserved in its original condition is Ulvö chapel, dating back to 1622. Inside, it´s richly decorated with wall paintings. Guided tours take place here. (read more) external link, opens in new window

Café Måsen, on Ulvön island is run by the clown Ruben, an artiste with the world as his stage. He often entertains his guests with tricks and surprises.  (read more)  external link

Sandviken , On the north-eastern beach of Ulvön, you´ll find the old fishing village of Sandviken in a very calm, peaceful environment. The isostatic uplift has “moved" the buildings quite a distance away from the water. (read more) external link

Trysunda
Sheltered inlet The fishing village at the Trysunda nature reserve is one of the best preserved along the Ångermanland coast. The harbour is sheltered in a deep inlet and is very popular with sailing folk. The island has a number of coves where you can take a cooling dip, viewpoints and picnic sites with wind shelters. Trysunda chapel with its lovely wall painting is well worth a visit.  Fiskemuseet-the Fishing Museum
is a good place to visit on Trysunda — it´s home to examples of old utensils and pots and a wide variety of fish found in the Gulf of Bothnia. This museum also has a service block, rooms to let and a shop.

SKÄRGÅRDSBÅTARNA — the Archipelago Boats
In the summer, archipelago boats depart daily for Ulvön from Köpmanholmen (m/f Ulvön) and Ullånger / Docksta / Mjällomslandet (m/s Kusttrafik).M/F Ulvön also land at the jetty on Trysunda.  A new boat will be going from örnsköldsviks this summer. Please contact the Tourist information for timetables etc.

Höga Kustenleden- the High Coast Trail
is divided into 13 stages and is no less than 130 km long, stretching from Varvsberget in Örnsköldsvik to the Hig Coast Bridge. Nowhere else in Sweden can you wander so high above sea level and yet so near to the coast. Maps and guides showing the path can be purchased from the tourist information offices in Örnsköldsvik and Kramfors.

Örnsköldsviks gästhamn
has developed into a very popular place where people can meet for both business and pleasure. Service companies of the most diverse types can be found at the Arken Service Centre. A college and university give the area plenty of energy, there are restaurants and other places to meet close by, and the guest harbour, one of the best in Sweden, can also be found here — and it´s been awarded the Blue Flag too. Skagen,  Skeppsmalen and  Skagshamn
Skagshamn and Skeppsmalen is where the Red Wolf sits and seethes at the biggest surströmming salting house in the world (surströmming is a Swedish fish delicacy). You'll also find a well preserved fishermen's chapel dating back to the mid-17th century here. This region is brilliant for sun worshippers who want to find themselves their own little rock to give them some shelter from the fresh winds which occasionally blow here. Great things are often to be found in museums. This is also now the case for the High Coast's most famous culinary delight, surströmmingen. The deliciously-smelling museum is open in the summer at Skeppsmalen.A visit to Skags udde, the furthest outpost towards the sea on the northern High Coast, is recommended.
